Who we are

The New Mexico Society of Addiction Medicine (NMSAM) is the state chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the leading interdisciplinary professional society in New Mexico focused on addiction prevention, treatment, recovery, and policy.

We are a growing community of over 80 members. Our members include physician specialists board-certified in addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry, as well as advanced practice providers, physician assistants, counselors, therapists, social workers, researchers, peer support workers, and public health professionals. Together, we work to strengthen the state’s response to substance use and addiction through evidence-based, culturally responsive, and person-centered care.

NMSAM envisions a future where:

  • All New Mexicans can access high-quality, effective care for substance use;

  • The dignity and self-determination of people who use drugs or are in recovery are protected;

  • The cultural strengths and wisdom of New Mexico’s diverse communities are centered in the way care is delivered.

Our mission is to build a statewide professional community that supports clinicians and practitioners across disciplines. We aim to:

  • Improve access to and quality of addiction treatment, including medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and integrated behavioral health care.

  • Foster collaboration and shared learning across providers, programs, and systems.

  • Expand and train the addiction workforce, from medical and behavioral health students to experienced professionals.

  • Promote and disseminate the evolving science of addiction and recovery.

  • Engage in policy and advocacy to support person-centered, equitable, and community-based care.

We host member meetings, educational events, support workforce development initiatives, and engage in statewide efforts to shape systems of care that are responsive to New Mexico’s unique needs.

Whether you're a physician, counselor, peer support worker, or public health practitioner, NMSAM provides a home for professionals dedicated to advancing recovery and mitigating the harms of substance use.
